Find your

pathway homeward

into midwifery

MAP is designed to feel like you're journeying homeward, to a place that feels safe and welcoming. At every level of this program, we've aimed to make everyone - both students and the communities they serve - feel deliberately included. What does this look like? It takes many forms in different areas of the program, but two key ones are that we have built-in scholarships for groups that have been historically, persistently or systematically marginalized within the US, and we make no assumptions or judgments about the identities of our midwifery students or the clients they serve.
At MAP, we care for our students the same way we care for our clients: with kindness, compassion, respect and trust.

Laying the Groundwork

At MAP, when we create our pathways for you, each is built with the same four layers for its foundation:

Equity & inclusivity

We have a goal of presenting inclusive material in a culturally sensitive way, have automatic scholarships for historically marginalized groups, and a not-for-profit module on cultural awareness.

Affordability

Fees are kept low, and include textbooks, resources ranging from a neonatal manikin to a doppler, and supplies for creating your own resources, setting you up for practice, and to sell birth-related items.

Built-in off ramps

Each module covers skills that lead to related but distinctly different careers, in case students decide not to follow the midwifery path to its end, such as prenatal yoga, doula or medical assistant.

No gaps

Ensuring our students learn everything they need to know to practice safely is a weighty responsibility - we do not take it lightly. On the other hand, we try not to waste time with exercises that teach little.

MAP to Midwifery

Your pathway to this point in your life has been unique;
your pathway through MAP will be unique, too.

MAP contains 12 modules, all of which teach midwifery skills and knowledge, as well as skills for alternative career paths, which give the courses their names. These can be taken as stand-alone courses for anyone who wants to enhance their skills in a given area, or all 12 can be completed in order to graduate from MAP. You must be enrolled in MAP (at no extra cost) for this option. For more details on the contents of each course, see the course catalog.

Section A contains three courses fundamental to midwifery practice, namely cultural awareness, business creation and midwifery research. Sections B, C and D cover the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum stages respectively. Each begins with a course that includes much (but not entirely) material that would be considered 'lay' skills, i.e. skills practiced by those not in a medical profession, such as doulas. The second course in these sections includes more material on 'medical' skills, i.e. skills practiced by those in a medical profession, such as medical assistants, though this is presented in a holistic manner, in keeping with the nature of midwifery. The final course completes the remainder of the 'midwifery' skills relevant to the section.

It's important to note that every single course is designed with midwifery in mind, and so Prenatal Yoga, for example, contains far more anatomy and physiology than you would normally cover in a prenatal yoga school. These three sections do correspond somewhat to Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3, but there is no requirement to be in any particular phase when you complete a course.

You can choose your own path through these modules, but it's strongly recommended that you complete the prenatal-, intrapartum- or postpartum- midwife module after having completed the earlier courses in the respective section. Some textbooks included in earlier modules might also be required in the capstone module for these sections. Please check with MAP before purchasing any of these modules as stand-alone units.

Section A - Principal Principles
